Suffield Academy Alumni Soccer (2015)

Note: this was written in August 2024 to recreate a post which was lost. All of my old computers, Google Drive, Facebook, etc. were all searched for context, but only what was shown below was able to be recovered. I will try to add some details, but as my memories have faded, this may well be all that I have left of that moment in time.

12 September 2015

The Suffield Academy Tigers played an exhibition game against the Alumni Team.

Jim Knight [‘73] is seen in the top right cell offering a donation in honor of his late son, James Knight [‘99].

I don’t remember who won this game, as if that really matters. I always took this opportunity to return and brag about the success ‘my teams’ had in the late 80s and early 90s. A couple championships and an undefeated regular season in my senior year!

Anyway, in all seriousness, it is an opportunity for the alumni to help the current varsity team to hone its skills during their preseason.

These games serve as a platform to bond students and alumni of multiple generation, connecting Suffield’s past with Suffield’s present and future.”

For the second straight year I showed up in cargo shorts, sneakers, and without shin guards, but there was a mixed bag in that regard. Thank god I was alone; how embarrassing would that have been for me to be the only vagrant there.

I am constantly reminded that I only scored three goals in my life; one while I was a middle school captain at The Rectory School, here during high school, and the last at college [an overtime winning score by the way], but I tried my damnedest to get one in this game! The goalie [I wish I remembered his name] made an amazing save to thwart my effort.

Although I would be back to support the team and cheer on the alumni, this was the last year I played in the game. My undiagnosed high blood pressure was getting the best of me. Since the 2024 game was canceled, who knows what the future will bring. I’m in training mode now!

Bonus content: a stylized image of me apparently falling over while passing a ball along; my beautiful fiancée, Nicole Durham, photographer of all the other pictures I’m in; and a few of that next generation in the fields below.

Additional bonus content: we found more pictures! Nicole obviously took the little guy for a walk while we were warming-up.

I’m very proud of this school and the fact that I graduated from there. Even though I couldn’t find a video specially about the 2015 Alumni Sports Day, here is one that showcases the varsity team, made during the tail end of the same season:
