Fort Trumbull

Note, this was written the fourth anniversary, 25 July 2024, to recreate a post which was lost. Old computer(s), Google Drive, Facebook, etc. were all searched for context, but not much was able to be recovered. We will try to add some details, but as our memories have faded, this may well be all that we have left of that moment in time.

This State Park could technically be a day-trip, but we chose to spend the night in the area so catch some more attraction on the way back the next day. Since a lot of place we like are breweries and vineyards, it’s not wise to fill up a schedule with too many.

Fort Trumbull is a fort near the mouth of the Thames River on Long Island Sound in New London, Connecticut, and named for Governor Jonathan Trumbull. The original fort was built in 1777, but the present fortification was built between 1839 and 1852. The site lies adjacent to the Coast Guard Station New London and is managed as the 16-acre Fort Trumbull State Park by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

I’m not sure we have more pictures of the Blockhouse than from inside the museum. It was a nice blockhouse though.

The fort is on the New London side of the Thames Rives and looking across you can see them building nuclear powered submarines in Groton. I actually got to see them launch one when I was a child, but I don’t think I want to post any of the picture we took, show a satellite view, or even write too much about it. LOL *gulp

On the walk around the grounds, we stopped by the cannons, of course, and saw that there was a ‘vintage’ baseball team playing [or practicing] in the adjacent field. I had to look them up, and they’re called the Thames Baseball club. They have an active schedule! I wonder if they ever play the team at Fort Warren, George’s Island, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts? We have a few pictures of them in our Boston Harbor Camping posts.

It was a short drive into New London proper and we chose a riverside restaurant to take in the beautiful summer rays and scenery. While we were eating, the Mayflower II came around the bend and was docked close by. Of course we walked over to it. Our ‘official’ visit to tour the ship would be done during the Pilgrim 400th year anniversary festivities later in the year when it was back in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

  • Before we headed back to the hotel to relax, we went over to a local brewery, and that visit has it’s own post called Tox Brewing Company.
