A.C.T. XI

This is a ‘recreated’ post written on 15 August 2024. I recently went disc golfing with an old friend, my rival, JumboC. We discussed many of the old times playing in the Amateur Challenge Tournament (ACT) and I had nothing on here to reference as they were all on Facebook. This post will be a placeholder where I’ll put in the deteriorated pictures I’ve downloaded from there, until a time when I’ll add context about the day.

This tournament was the ACT’s eleventh year, but the fourth in which we participated… and this was a Saturday where in all the other years we played on Sunday.

I will break you!!

I had written some text on Facebook at the time. Some correspond to pictures in the gallery above:

  1. N/A

  2. “Players Meeting”

  3. [JumboC] text me this pic mid-round of how close he threw it. Just what I needed. LOL”

  4. N/A

  5. “I'm out of bounds, again.”

  6. “I need a cooler like this one. Thanks to the guy at Firefly Hollow Brewing that brought this. It helped, a lot”

  7. “Based on first round scores, Jimmy and I were paired up for the second round again.”

  8. “The meeting before the second round”

  9. “It's weird how close together the discs can land when thrown with different techniques.”

  10. [JumboC’s] disc in the tree on the Second. There was no "two-meter" rule so no penalty.”

  11. “I hardly ever throw using a ‘flick’ style. This pic is proof, LOL”

I did not win but I had fun till 3 holes left

I defeated JumboC for the second straight year! We were both paired in the same second-round group due to having the same first-round score of 76. Once again, a disastrous first half cost him, and a better back-nine could not even come close to making up the difference.

I thought I was a fairly good player, some things are better left unseen.

For reference, the ‘tournament’ is two days long and is comprised of four separate championships in essence: two MA1 and two MA2 groups. We played in a ‘MA2,’ a second division. The seeding is by-choice, so if they were all to be combined, then I would have finished in the mid-to-late-80th position out of 109 players.

Driving times are approximate:

  • Hartford = 0h, 15m.

  • Tolland = 0h, 20m.

  • New Haven = 0h, 45 m.

  • Torrington = 0h, 55m.

  • New London = 1h, 0m.

  • Boston = 1h, 35m.

  • NYC = 2 h, 30m.
