Saint Patrick’s Day - NYC (2017)
I headed down to watch [some of] the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City on 17 March 2017.
It was a beautiful jaunt into New York for the afternoon; the train took less than an hour. The skies were clear, and it was about 50 degrees. I saw the beginning of the parade as it passed across from viewing stands where Central Park starts. There was a good size turnout, but it was not overcrowded, and this location thankfully lacked the stereotypical college aged revelers. The route the parade takes up Broadway is a logistical nightmare to try to walk along though. The NYPD placed barricades which forced spectators to walk half-way down each perpendicular block in order to slow crowd movement. Due to the distance back to the Grand Central Station, I had to cut the day a bit short so I could catch my ride home.
I had spent some time before the parade exploring Central Park. Most of the pictures were taken in the first few minutes at the intersection of 5th Avenue and East 65th Street. Some of the stills were shot as I walked counter to the route and further up into the urban canyon. The two areas had completely different vibes.
Experience rating (limited): 7/10
Bonus content: I have video of the first few minutes of the parade and uploaded it to YouTube, not so much to show the marchers, but rather my rambling strategy while ‘watching’ it.
