Fort Griswold

Note, this was written on 26 July 2024, the fourth anniversary of our trip to the New London area. This is an attempt to recreate a post which was lost. Old computer(s), Google Drive, Facebook, etc. were all searched for context, but not much was able to be recovered. We will try to add some details, but as our memories have faded, this may well be all that we have left of that moment in time.

I never really learned much about Connecticut’s storied history during the Revolutionary War. This visit truly shocked me. Look across the Thames River towards Fort Trumbull and New London, the Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park is somewhere every citizen should visit.

Lieutenant-Colonel William Ledyard surrendered by handing his sword hilt-first to Loyalist officer Major Bromfield, who took it and thrust it through Ledyard.

The battlefield…

This embedded YouTube video explains more about the tragedy of this massacre than I can.
